Ujjain Travel Guide

 

Ujjain is a prominent city of the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. This is an ancient city with strong historical significances and settled on the banks of Kshipra River. In ancient times, this city was known as Ujjayini. The name of this place is also mentioned in the great epic Mahabharata, when Ujjayini was the capital of the Avanti Kingdom.

Usually this city is dignified as one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, and most importantly Ujjain is one of the four sites that host the Kumbh Mela which is organized once in four year and attracts mass pilgrimage that includes millions of Hindu pilgrims from around the country and world. Visiting Ujjain is more of exploring Hinduism and its divinity.

Why visit Ujjain?

 

  • Ujjain is such a place where you will get to see a number of temples and the most important of them is the Mahakaleshwar temple which is an old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the twelve Jyotirllingas of India. This is a temple where you have to wait for hours in queues to have a glimpse of the Shivalingam. Very sacred and popular among the locals for its divinity and holiness
  • You can also visit the Mahakali temple which is located near this temple and a must visit after the Makaleshwar.
  • DO not forget to visit the Kaal Bhairava temple which is a popular temple and you can see a number of beautiful paintings on the walls. It is believed that the Aghora saints use to worship here to get blessings of the Lord.
  • People who are dedicated more to Lord Ganesha can visit the Chintaman Ganesh temple and Bade Ganesji Ka Mandir mostly on Tuesdays. Both the temples and its idols are extremely beautiful and holistic.
  • You can visit the Durgadas Ki Chhatri which is an extensive monument with beautiful architecture and her you will get to listen about various historical stories about the Kings of this city.
  • Do visit the Gadkalika and the Mangalnath temple which are dedicated ancient and the Gadkalika temple is believed to be visited by poet Kalidas and the deity was worshipped by him. The mangalnath temple is related to the Matsya Purana and believed to be the birth place of the Mars planet.
  • Do visit the Vikram Kirt Mandir which is dedicated to King Vikramaditya and do not forget to see the throne of him which is known as the “seat of judgment is located in the Rudra Sagar lake and called as Salabanjika Simhasan among locals.
