The Cave Temples of Mahabalipuram are situated on the hillock of town. The Rock Cut Temple are also called mandapas or rock-cut caves, they are temples secured with bas-reliefs. The earliest period of u of these caves as temples is followed by Buddhist and Jain periods. There are eleven Mandapam in Mahabalipuram out of which the Varaha Cave Temple, Krishna Cave Temple, Pancha Pandava Cave Temple are popular ones.

This temple is date back to mid 7th century. Its exhumed section is seen with segments prompting a lobby. An eminent cutting inside the cave is an etched board which draws out the myth of Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill to protect the cow herds and gopis (milk maids) from heavy rains and floods, furthermore scenes of Krishna frolicking with the milk maids.

It is located close to Light house on the top of the hills. It has two wonderfully cut frescoes of Durga, the mother goddess at both closures of the long hall of the cave. She is indicated situated on lion her mount or vehicle with every one of her weapons. The portrayal likewise includes her stance of killing the buffalo headed Mahishasura. At the other side of the hall, opposite to the Durga panel, the scene carved is of Vishnu in a reclining position on the bed of Ananta multi-hooded serpent. He is surrounded by the awesome creatures of heaven appealing him to continue with the formation of the universe.

It is date back to 7th century also known as Adivaraha The most noticeable form is that of Vishnu in the incarnation type of a pig lifting mother earth from the ocean. Additionally cut are numerous legendary figures in the entry porch carved on the rock face the segments are cut on lion bases. At the center of the rear wall, guardian figures are delineated flanking a holy place. The side side walls have curved sculpture panels of Vishnu as Trivikrama and Vishnu in the incarnation of Varaha, the boar, lifting Bhudevi, the earth goddess.

The Trimurti Cave Temple is dated to the mid eighth century. It has separate segments in a sequenced committed to each of the Hindu trinity lords of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva or Maheshwara the three places of worship are removed from the rock face. It is one of the beautiful temple in Mahabalipuram built by the Pallavas. This structure is implicit Dravidian style and is found towards the north of Arjuna Penance. It has been perfectly cut out from a rock that looks like a chariot. Prior, this temple was lord Shiva’s holy place however now it is devoted to Lord Ganesha. There used to be lingam in this temple, which has now been supplanted by the symbol of Ganesha. Among the various ratha temples, it is the only complete structure.

Dharmaraja Cave is a seventh century cave temple, which has three vacant places of worship. For these three divinities, there are three garbhagriha (cells), which are vacant at present. This caves is also called as Atyantakama mandapam according to the engravings. Beside maha mandapam are two full Mahendra type pillars and two half pillars with a plain kapota. The cave does not contain important sculptural figures and is for the mostly visited by the researchers.

This temple is situated on the hill top at the distance of 15 km from the Mahabalipuram. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The directing divinities in this temple are of Arulmigu Vedagiriswarar and Arulmigu Thirumalai Adyar. The temple is believed to be a part of the Pallava Art and has a place with the time of 830 – 1100 AD.
