Rath Yatra

The Ratha Yatra is a major Hindu festival of the Chariots of Lord Jagannath is held at Puri, Orissa during the months of June-July. The colorful festival is world famous and draws millions of devotees from various parts of the world. This festival is a symbol of equality and integration. The presiding deities of the temple Sri Mandira, Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, with the ethereal wheel Sudarshana, are taken out from the temple grounds in a sophisticated ceremonial pageant to their relevant chariots. The enormous Chariots are colorfully decked and are pulled by thousands of devotees to the grand avenue of the Gundicha temple.

The festival has various names like Ghosa Yatra, Gundicha Yatra, Dasavatara Yatra and Navadina Yatra. People celebrate this festival to mark Lord Krishna’s journey from Gokul to Mathura. The temple’s representative deities are popularly called as Utsava Murti in South and in Orissa, they are known as Bije Pratima or Chalanti Pratima. Famous Oriya songs are sung during the festival which says that the ethereal wheel, the grand avenue, and the chariots become one on this occasion with Lord Jagannatha.
