Lahaul and Spiti is a district of the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. This district was two separate districts named as Lahaul and Spiti but it formerly came together in the year 1960. Lahaul and Spiti are both quite different from each other on the climatic point of view but they both are valleys. Spiti is more infertile and difficult to cross, and it is surrounded between harsh ranges, and it also has the Spiti River flowing beside the ranges in the southeast where it meets the Sutlej River. Spiti is a distinctive mountain desert area whereas when we talk about Lahaul then this place is also covered with hard grasses and the place is covered with shrubs too.

Why visit Lahaul and Spiti?

 

  • Lahaul and Spiti are the two valleys where you can enjoy nature at best. The people are Lahaul are known for their beautiful eyes and fair skin and you can see the houses over here are made in typical Tibetan Style. In this place you can beautiful natural surroundings with rich fauna. In Lahaul and Spiti Valley you can spot animals like Tibetan antelope, argali, kiangs, ibex, musk deer, brown bears, foxes and very rare snow leopards. Also see the, Himalayan Blue Sheep in Pin Valley National Park and Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • You can visit Keylong where you can see a good number of Buddhist gompas or monasteries and especially the Kardang Gompa which is the largest Buddhist monastery in Lahaul and you can also visit the Sgashur Gompa which is located on a height of the Valley and you can have a great view of Lahual from here. Among various other monasteries of Lahaul one can see the Guru Ghantal, Khungri Monastery in Pin Valley,Sherkhang Gompa in Lahlungand Tnagyud Gompa of the Sakya Sect in Komic.
  • While visiting the Spiti Valley do not forget to go for Skiing and Yak Safari on the various treks and trails of the valley. Some of the popular trekking routes in the area includeKaza-Langza-Hikim-Komic-Kaza, Kaza-Losar-Kunzum La Kaza-Ki-Kibber-Gete-Kaza, and Kaza-Tabo-Sumdo-Nako some very harsh passes like Parangla Pass, Baba Pass, Pin Parvati Pass, Hampta Pass treks.
  • DO not forget to see the Tabo Monastery which is UNESCO heritage site, as this monastery is the 10th century monastery and you can see some beautiful wall paintings, scriptures, art pieces which are very rare and noted as Stucco and Tankhas.

Lahaul and Spiti Tips and Recommendations

 

  • While visiting the various monasteries of Lahaul and Spiti do not forget to see the Buddhist Mummy of a Monk in Ghuen which is about 550 years old and Chandrataal Lake are the main tourist attractions of the region.
  • While going for the treks do not forget to carry all the necessary items like heavy woolen clothes sleeping bags, cooking utensils, packed food as you will not get anything on the harsh valleys.
  • In Lahaul and Spiti if you are going for the treks then make sure to not go for the unknown treks as you may get lost in the cold deserts.
