Konark Travel Guide

Konark is a small town lies in the district of Puri of the state of Odisha in India. It is a famous tourist destination for the people who visit Odisha. This city lies on the coastal area of the Bay of Bengal and quite a far away from the capital city of Bhubaneswar.

The name of the city is derived by the famous Konark Sun Temple constructed in the 13th Century during the reign of King Narsimhadeva and every year a grand Konark Classical Dance festival is organized on the platforms of the temple which is a worth watch, prominent classical dancers from all over the country come here to participate in this dance festival. The Konark Sun Temple is a world Heritage Site and there is a sun temple museum which is managed by the Archeological Survey of India.

Why visit Konark?

 

  • Very obviously you will visit Konark to see the Sun Temple which was made in the 13th century and designed in a model of a huge chariot with twelve pairs of wheels that is pulled by seven horses. The Sun Temple is one of the stunning temples of India in terms of the architecture. The architecture of this temple is inspired by the Odishan (anciently known as Kalingan) architecture. The horses are imagined in such a way that you will feel that the Sun God is riding this chariot by himself.
  • The temple is said to be the chariot of the Sun God who is riding this chariot and there is a place inside the temple of as rider is present, as you go up to the end of the temple through the stairs. This massive temple is full of stone carvings done on the walls and in the entire temple. You can see the sculptures of various dancers and musicians on the walls.
  • You can definitely visit the Chandrabhaga Beach which is quite a few kilometers away from the Konark Temple and a great tourist destination as you can view some of the beautiful waves of the Bay of Bengal and also you can spot some beautiful and quiet deer in the deer park located adjacent to the beach.

  • You must visit the small museum located outside the temple compound managed by Archaeological Survey of India, which show you the various sculpture from the temple ruins.
  • You can visit the Pipli Village where you can buy some very beautiful handicrafts of the state such as the applique lamps which are very popular of this village.
  • Do visit Konark during the Chandrabhaga Fair which happens every year in the month of February and you can find many beautiful things here; also you can attend the Konark Dance Festival.
  • You can buy exclusive souvenirs of the state from the government shops but you can buy beautiful handicrafts made of seashells, but do not forget to bargain with the shop keepers for the right price.
