Katra is a town located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Katra is basically known as the home of the the very sacred and religious shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. This town is located on the foothills of Trikuta hills and Katra is known as the base campground for the pilgrims who visit Vaishno Devi. This place is visited by thousands of pilgrims all over the year but in millions during the navratras twice a year which is a factor for flourishing tourism industry of the state. In Katra you will get all kinds of accommodation facilities as there are plenty of hotels, lodges, guest houses, dhabas, and restaurants fast-food eating points suitable to all kinds of budgets. You will also get free accommodation facilities provided by some registered trusts in the form of Sarais but these are basically for those who are financially weaker. This is a religious place with strong mythological significance.

Why visit Katra?


  • People usually visit Katra to visit the Vaishno Devi Shrine. This is considered as one of the most religious places of the country. This is a Shakti Peetha and located in a cave which is believed to be 700 years old. This cave temple is located on the high hills of Trikuta which takes few days to reach there by trekking. It is said that Goddess came to the dream of a villager and asked him to build a shrine on the hills.
  • You can also visit the Adhkunwari because this is considered to be one of the most important darshans where Mata Vaishno Devi is believed to have meditated in this cave for nine months. An exit on the other end of the cave was made by the Goddess when Bhairon Nath approached the cave. The shape of the cave is like a womb and is very narrow and a single can person can pass through it at a time.
  • Beside the religious visit of Vaishno Devi you can visit the Sanjichhat is a beautiful spot located near Adhkunwari. This place is a must visit for all those nature lovers who want to see the pristine beauties of hills and valleys. The splendid views of the valley and snow covered peaks of Himalayas is viewed from this spot.
  • You can also visit the Kal Bhairava Temple which is believed is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Kal Bhairav Form. There is a scary deity of Lord Kaal Bhairava is seen here where you can also see his ride as dog.

  • Do not take katra just as a religious place but you can shop a lot from this place as you can walk through the main market to buy dry fruits, hosiery, leather jackets, woolen garments souvenirs, and many others.
  • In this area you can have some good vegetarian foods and also there are many restaurants who serve you with good food especially rajama and rice and also lip smacking snacks.
