Kargil Travel Guide

Kargil is a town located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. This town is famous for the India-Pakistan War (Operation Vijay) happened in the year 1999 where India defeated Pakistan. This town is mostly dominated by Muslim community but this town has many Buddhist monasteries to be seen because this is an important transport hub of Ladakh, with roads leading from here to Leh, Srinagar, and Padum in Zanskar, so there are good crowds of Buddhists are staying here. Being a small town Kargil is quite away from the normal hustle bustle of a big town and people can spend some quiet moments in Kargil. Kargil can be an interesting destination in several ways because there are many tourists who visit this place from Zangskar Kashmir and Central Ladakh.

Why visit Kargil?

 

  • If you are an Indian then you must visit DrasWar Memorial which is a place where you will feel proud to be an Indian. It is a very special experience for any Indian to be here. This memorial is having a gallery which showcases the various photographs of the war and you will see the tough times and the patriotism our soldiers have spent on the war ground and sacrificed their lives to keep us safe in our homes.
  • You can also visit the Lamayaru Monastery where you can get some peaceful moments to spend as it is a lovely place with all natural beauty surrounding it. As this town is in Ladakh, this monastery is located on a high hill and you have to climb a lot but you get a very good ambiance around this monastery.
  • You cannot miss the Suru valley which is a great place to see the natural ambiance and beautiful locations. The hills get covered with snow during the winters and you also get to see lush surroundings as poplar and willow trees are densely seen here. You can also see the thorny Nun-Kun Mountain peaks which are sparkling and majestic and along with that you will love to see free flowing suru river, you can also see phokar rock carvings, parkachik glacier, panikhar and also visit parkachik villages to see the typical Kashmiri culture.
  • You can visit the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum of Central Asian and Kargil Trade Artifacts which is a museum display objects that circulated along the trade routes between Ladakh and Yarkand. You can see various articles in this museum such as Armory, Carpets, Coins and Currencies, Horse accessories, Daily Consumer Goods, Lamps and Pipes, Caps and Dresses, jewelry, Paintings, Utensils and Crockery, silk and manuscripts and books and among which a handwritten Quran and old Tibetan manuscripts are essential of this museums.

  • In Kargil you will have a great time having the various Tibetan delicacies in the main Bazaar. The Tibetan restaurant will serve you with some of the delicious and inexpensive dishes, such as Momo and Thugpka.
  • You can buy some apricots from this place as there are no such huge malls present in Kargil.
