Kanheri Caves Mumbai

Kanheri Caves comprises of groups of rock-cut monuments that dates back to first century BCE to the 10th century CE. The cave are located north of Borivali on the western outskirts of Mumbai, India. The caves are excavated in volcanic breccias, the hills rising at places to 1550’ above mean sea level. Kanheri is credited with the biggest number of cavern unearthing in a solitary mound. There are about 34 unfinished depictions of Buddha inside the Caves.

The Kanheri Caves are renowned for their regular Basalt arrangements, ancient architecture and the 109 special passages to the caves. The unearthings at Kanheri are of the following types

  • chaityagrhas, the place of worship of the Buddhist community
  • viharas or monasteries, they consist of single and multiple celled where the Buddhist monks resided,
  • podhis or water reservoirs, which were excavated ingeniously to trap the rain water and store them for use during summer periods
  • rock-cut benches and seats.

Kanheri caves during the rainy season offers a great spot away from the city. The rugged hilly terrain of the caves have numerous small waterfalls. The road from the entry point of Sanjay Gandhi National Park to Kanheri caves have also numbers of stream where tourist can enjoy and unwind amidst the natural beauty.
