Fort Aguada

Fort Aguada overlooking the majestic Arabian Sea is located on Sinquerim Beach in Goa India. It is a seventeenth-century Portuguese fort constructed in 1613 in order to prevent attacks of the Dutch and Marathas. It is one of the largest and the best-preserved Portuguese bastion in Goa .The territory around the fortress housed an expansive well and various springs that furnished crisp drinking water to the voyagers that landed by boat. "Agua" in Portuguese means water, accordingly the stronghold determined its name "Aguada" to signify a spot where water is gathered. Ringed by thick fortifications, the heart of the fortress was secured by two hundred cannons and a profound dry channel, which one still need to cross to get inside.

Today the Fort Aguada Beach Resort sits where unique fortress once did. The five-star resort Vivanta by Taj – Fort Aguada overlooking the Sea is located on Sinquerim Beach comprising of villas and cottages, with 130 rooms including 24 Terrace Suites.

Inside Fort Aguada

Strategically located at the estuary of the stream Mandovi, this fortress was developed in 1612 as a prepare for intrusions from the Dutch and the Marathas. The walls of this fortification are 5 metres high and 1.3 metres wide. An intriguing characteristic in the area of the fortification is a 13 metre high beacon. This beacon built in 1864, at first utilized an oil light. This beacon was home to a gigantic bell that was recovered from around the remnants of the St. Augustus religious community at Old Goa. Notwithstanding, the ringer has now been moved to the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception church at Panaji.
