Bodh Gaya is an important religious site and place of pilgrimage for both the Hindus and Buddhism. This is the place where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. Bodh Gaya, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, is a highly visited tourist place in Bihar and is well known for its architectural monuments and historic importance.

Mahabodhi Temple, one of the four holy pilgrimages of the Buddhist is a UNESCO World Heritage site, located in the Bodh Gaya town of Bihar. This Buddhist temple date backs to the 250 BCE era and is the exact location, where prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and came to known as Gautama Buddha. There are many other significant spots, during Buddha’s enlightenment like the Bodhi tree, Pali Canon, Bodhimanda etc.

The Bodhi Tree is a sacred Fig tree, one of the most important attractions of Bodh Gaya. This is the tree under which prince Gautama Siddhartha spent his first seven days in Bodh Gaya and attained enlightenment. This tree is a direct descendant planted in 288 BC from the original specimen.

Vishnupad Mandir

One of the most celebrated Hindu temple of the region, Vishnupad Mandir is located along the Falgu river and believed to have the footprint of Lord Vishnu, incised into a block of basalt. This temple, built in 1787, have been visited by many legendary saints like Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Sankardeva and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

About 15 km away from Bodh Gaya is the Dungeswari Temple that surrounds the cave, which is believed to have protected prince Gautama for six long years before he finally left for Bodh Gaya and attained enlightenment. The place is highly attracted by local as well as foriegn tourists.
