Famous Religious places in Leh – Ladakh

There are many religious places in Leh where you can go for offering prayers. The names of the places are:

Shanti Stupa:

It is situated at a height of 4267 mts. It gives a panoramic view of snow capped mountains. It is located at a distance of 5kms drive from the Leh. From Shanti Stupa you can see all over Leh city. It was built by the Buddhists of Ladakh and Japanese. It was built to promote world peace and prosperity and to commemorate the 2500 years of Buddhism.

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib:

It is situated before 25kms from Leh. It was created in memory of Guru Nanak Dev ji the founder and the first guru of Sikh religion. It is well maintained by army. Occasionally many festivals are celebrated here according to Sikh calendar like Guru Nanak Ji birthday.

Jama Masjid:

The only Masjid in Leh. It is situated in the busiest area of Leh super market. This is of the oldest mosques in Leh. Every Friday many people assemble at the mosque to offer the prayers (azaan).

Serzang Temple:

This temple is a heritage site located in Basgo village. The large idol of Maitreya Buddha is located in the centre of the temple which is made of gold. This temple gives a beautiful scenic view of the village. People of Basgo village maintained the temple. There is an entry fee of Rs.30 only.

Chokhang Vihara Temple:

It is located near Sindhu Ghat. Here you can see the glimpse of Buddhist culture. The walls of the temple are decorated with paintings on scrolls depicting the life of Buddha. The temple has a large courtyard where you can see many monks doing meditation. You can also talk to the monks about the significance of the prayer wheels surrounding the temple and any other questions if you want to ask.
