Famous Religious places in Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir has many religious places which have their own importance. The names of these places are:

Raghunath Temple:

It is one of the largest temples in North India. Inside the temple there are many small temples which indicate different gods and goddess. It was built by Maharaja Gulab Singh (founder of the kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir) and his son Ranbir Singh. There are seven shrines, each having its own Shikhara, present at the site of the temple. Here you can see many idols of the Hindu gods and goddesses. The inner walls of the main temple are covered with gold sheet. This temple attracts many tourists.

Amarnath Cave:

This Cave is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located 141kms away from Srinagar. You can reach here via Pahalgam town. It is surrounded by mountains the cave is open for a brief period in summers (July to mid August) for the pilgrims. Rest of the time the cave is covered with snow. This yatra is popularly known as the Amarnath Yatra, thousands of devotees visit this place during at that time.

Vaishno Devi:

Vaishno Devi is one of the most auspicious places for Hindus. It is located in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir. This temple is visited throughout the year, but the path becomes difficult during winters when the route is often blocked by snow-fall. The pilgrims shout of ‘Jai Matadi’ on the way up and down to the temple.

Bawey Wali Mata:

Every Tuesday and Sunday pilgrims visit this temple to worship the Goddess. This religious temple is situated on the left bank of the river Tawi. It was constructed by Raja Bahu Lochan over 3,000 years ago. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kali popularly known as Bawey wali Mata.

Sudh Mahadev Temple:

It is located in the town of Chanhani (western part of the Jammu). Temple was constructed by Chaudhari Ramdas of Chanhani and his son Chaudhari Parag Mahajan about 80 years ago. It is situated at an altitude of 1225 m above sea level. Pilgrims visit the shrine on the full moon night of the rainy season to worship the famous Trident and a mace, which is said to belong to Lord Shiva.


Charar-e-Sharif  in Jammu & Kashmir

It is located in Kashmir is the mausoleum of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani at Charar-e-Sharif. People used to come to here for blessings and favor. And some came for knowledge and guidance. Every Thursday and Friday many people assemble here to offer the prayers. This place has a unique architecture with wooden carvings, grave stones and Persian carpets.

Jama Masjid:

This is of the oldest mosques in Kashmir. It is situated in the middle of the old city. Jama Masjid was built in the 14th century by Sikander Butshikan. Every Friday many people assemble at the mosque to offer the prayers. This place is architecturally unique, this monument has spires instead of domes. In Jama Masjid there are 350 pillars and every pillar is made from a single deodar trunk.
