It is one of the famous monastery in Darjeeling located in Bhutia Busty town. This monastery is also known as Karmaa Dorjee Chyoling monastery. The Bhutia Basti is the oldest monastery in Darjeeling, originally built on Observatory Hill in 1765 by Lama Dorje-rinzing. It was sacked by the Nepalese in 1815 and then rebuilt near St Andrews Church in 1861. It was finally moved to its present location in the Bhutia Basti, near Chowrasta, in 1879.

Ghoom Monastery is also known as Yogachoeling Gompa. It is located in a place called Ghoom in Darjeeling, hence the name Ghoom Gompa. It was in the year 1875 that a Mongolian astrologer cum monk established the Ghoom Gompa. Inside the monastery there is a huge giant size image of seated ‘Maitreya Buddha’. Like many other monasteries in and around Darjeeling, this gompa is also a storehouse of some rare Buddhist manuscripts.

This is a beautiful Hindu temple of Lord Shiva located close to the Darjeeling railway station. It was built in 1939 with the inspiration from the architecture of Pasupatinath temple complex of Katmandu. In the temple premises, you will see a white colored statue of Lord Shiva facing the temple near its entrance and surrounded by a short height concrete fence. This form represents the five different expressions of Shiva with his universal third eye.

Dali Monastery

Dali Monastery is also known as the Drukpa Kargyud Monastery. It is located at the distance of 5km from the main town of Darjeeling. The monasrery is known for preserving the old age cultural and traditions of the Tibetan monks. This is one of the biggest monasteries in Darjeeling. The walls are painted with bright colors depicting the story of life and journey of Lord Buddha.

Aloobari Monastery

It was located in Aloobari Village 3 km away from the Darjeeling . The actual name of this monastery is Mak Dhog Monastery It was dedicated to world peace because its time of construction coincided with that of the time of World War-1. It has several statues including that of Buddha and the sage Padmasambhava who transmitted Buddhism in Tibet and Bhutan.

It is situated on the observatory hills in Darjeeling. The Mahakal Temple represents a unique amalgam of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. This temple stands where the original Dorjeling Monastery was present in olden times, before it got destroyed in an invasion and was eventually shifted to a new location with a new name. According to beliefs, the temple enshrines three Shiva Lingams, which got manifested on their own in the year 1782. This temple has three gold-plated idols of the widely-worshipped trio of Hindu Gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

St. Andrew’s Church

An old Anglican Church, St. Andrew’s is located on the Mall Road. It has brass plaques that memorialize many well known old settlers of Darjeeling who came here in the 1800s. The church was built in the year 1843.
