Mathura is a city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. This city is more significant among the Hindu Pilgrims as this city is closely connected with Lord Krishna. According to Hindu Mythology, Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and this is also mentioned in the Puranas. Why visit Mathura?


  • You can start with the Keshav Dev Temple which is considered the birthplace of Lord Krishna. This temple is believed to be 5000 years old and hundreds of pilgrims visit this temple on an everyday basis. There are two main places are present in this temple complex. And in this complex, you can see the prisons where Vasudev and Devaki, (parents of Lord) Krishna were kept by his maternal uncle Kansa. This cell is also considered holy and sacred as Lord Krishna was born here. And you will feel the spiritual and transcendent power in the cell.
  • Next place which you can visit is the Bankey Bihari Temple which is known as the next most famous temple after this. This temple is again dedicated to Lord Krishna and people in thousands visit this temple during Janmashtami and Holi.
  • You can also visit the Govardhan hill which is considered as an auspicious place among the Hindus. This is the place where it is said that Lord Krishna held this hill to save the people of Mathura from rains. It is said that Lord Krishna picked this hill up with his hands and held it above His head, with his little finger, for 7 days to protect people from the anger of God Indra.
  • In Mathura you can visit an array of temples which are having their own stories and histories. Among other important temples, you can visit the Shri Dwarka Dheesh Temple, Sri Ganesha Temple, Jaigurudeo Temple and others.
  • Other important places you can visit near Mathura are Gokul, Nandgaon, Vrindavan, Barsana etc.
  • You can also visit the Jama Masjid which was built by Abo-in Nabir-Khan in 1661 and you can see the beautiful architecture of the mosque that has four tall and beautifully carved minarets, with bright colored plaster mosaic. But they are not in good condition and found in ruins
