Chamba is said to be a treasure house of art and culture. However few are aware that the district is also home to a wide variety of wildlife sanctuaries. Some of them are small and do not take long to explore while some are truly big. All of them offer an awesome scenic beauty and an amazing experience.

Gamgul Siahbehi Sanctuary

It is a high altitude sanctuary lies in the Chamba in northwest Himachal Pradesh. This is the only Sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh where Hangul or Kashmir Stag Cervus elaphus hanglu, a very rare species was reported. The sanctuary is under severe human pressure and is heavily grazed. Its northern boundary adjoins the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Kugti Sanctuary is located at the distance of 87 km from Chamba. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in the state and is spread over an area of 378.87 km. Kugti Sanctuary is one of the last homes of Himalayan tahr in Himachal Pradesh. It is also well-known as a source of many medicinal plants. Abundant water resources, many originating from glaciers and a diverse topography add to the attraction of the area. To the west, it is connected with Tundah Sanctuary by a forest corridor. There is an annual pilgrimage by thousands of people to the Mani Mahesh Temple inside the sanctuary.

Sechu Tuan Nala Sanctuary

Sechu Tuan Nala is one such wonderful wildlife sanctuary located of Chamba. It is situated at a quite high altitude and is home to a variety of trees and animals. Some of the animals which the tourists can spot of this area are Pheasants, Musk deer and Ibex and snow leopards are also seen at some points.

Tundah Sanctuary

Tundah Sanctuary is located in Chamba and it is connected with the Kugti Sanctuary by a forest corridor in the east. This picturesque sanctuary is a great attraction for all tourists who visit Chamba because this sanctuary is a home to a large number of Indian Wildlife species, including Himalayan tahr, Ibex, pheasants, and more. It also plays host to a small population of Musk deer. The forest area consists of moist deodar forest, western mixed coniferous forest, moist temperate deciduous forest, and alpine pastures.

Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary

This small sanctuary lies in the catchment of the Ravi River and contains patches of good coniferous and Oak forests. A lovely bowl-shaped meadow at Khajjiar, with a lake and a ‘floating’ island, is a popular tourist spot. There is a ‘golden’ domed temple at the edge of this meadow, dedicated to the deity ‘Khajinag’, from whom the area derives its name.
